Cautious looksA huge population of street children is a legacy of war and economic troubles. They are not angels, they are often involved in petty crime, they take drugs, they fight among each other, but first and foremost they are traumatised kids and they suffer enormously. They do not trust easily, and it takes time and a caring approach to help them to find themselves. | ![src=]() |

Smiling against all odds Apart from mental anguish, abuse and street violence, malnutrition, malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis also take their toll. Yet, most of the boys have very cheerful personality, at least it seems so. A closer look makes it obvious that the trauma of street life is deep-rooted, but their playful energy gives hope that the past can be overcome if they get a helping hand. |
Our planThe Amahoro Foundation has a multistage
plan of helping the street children in Kigali. E.g. we are helping to develop a centre for street children in Ndera, near Kigali, in co-operation with a local association "Les Enfants de Dieu". The pilot project in the Sulfo Industries' compound in Ndera was initiated in June 2002, when over one hundred street boys found not only shelter but also a friendly reception. We are striving to create a similar support centre for street girls. | |
