Health

There is a great potential for improving human health and the quality of life, through a better understanding of the nature. In nature the well being of people cannot be separated from their physical environment, including themselves, other humans and their communities as a significant component of the whole.

It is important to recognise that to large extent people can gain control over their life, and immediate environment. We simply activate people and support their development.

The projects of Amahoro Foundation emphasise a holistic approach to human health. We focus on the prevention and low cost solutions to health threats. The main areas of interest are:

  • Nutrition: despite the abundance of fruits and clean agricultural products in Rwanda, the average diet is plain and based on refined products. We aim to raise the nutritional awareness through our courses, instructors and the "Amahoro Cook Book".
  • Hygiene: many diseases spread easily because of the living conditions. Families live often in cramped spaces and even a simple cold is passed from one to another in a vicious circle. We teach simple ways like 'grand mother advise' - how by using the basic means limit or even better how to prevent a sickness.
  • Malaria: we are working on establishing an association of malaria patients. The aim is to share the knowledge of the proper treatment, and bring the cure to the people without financial means. Well treated malaria recurs once in 5 years. Badly treated or untreated malaria becomes chronic or leads to quick death
  • HIV/AIDS: the scale of the HIV infection is staggering. Especially in Rwanda, where years of war and rape added to the picture. Additionally, AIDS carries a serious social stigma - nobody talks about AIDS even in relation to the people who died from it. To help effectively, we have to walk around the wall of silence and shame. Amahoro plans to develop the network of instructors in connection with our malaria association. Most of the people with HIV/AIDS have malaria as well and they can be helped this way.
